Name of Speaker: Rainy Horvath
Affiliation: Author and Storyteller
Title of Talk: "Who's in Charge Here? The Commanders of the CBI
Theatre of War."
About the Program:
From 1941 to 1945, American, British, and Chinese troops fought side-by-side to accomplish their shared goal of driving Japanese aggressors -- the Axis -- out of China, Burma, and India (CBI). In a time before the Internet, in a land so vast and backward that it barely had telephone service, how did these young soldiers manage to accomplish this? The logistics, geographic, and communication barriers were monumental. Who led them to victory in spite of these complex international problems? Six different Commanders of the CBI Theatre of War from 1941-1945 will be discussed, including their leadership and style differences, their missions and methods, and what this revolving door of command meant to young troops struggling to live another day and make it home from World War II China.

Name of Speaker: Jeanne Sheehan Zaino
Affiliation: Professor of Political Science
Department of Political Science &
International Studies
Iona College
Title of Talk: "American Democracy in Crisis"
About the Program:
The public’s disenchantment with and distrust of American government is at an all-time high and who can blame them? In the face of widespread challenges – everything from record levels of personal and national debt and the sky-high cost of education, to gun violence, racial discrimination, an immigration crisis, overpriced pharmaceuticals, and much more – the government seems paralyzed and unable to act. The most recent example is Covid-19. It’s the deadliest pandemic in over a century. In addition to an unimaginable sick and death toll, it has left more than thirty million Americans unemployed. Despite this, Washington let the first round of supplemental unemployment benefits run out and for more than a month were unable to agree on a bill to help those suffering. This talk, based on Dr. Zaino’s book of the same name, delves into why we are in this situation.
