Many seem to favor replacing an idea of “the truth” with a personalized “my truth” or dismiss the value of truth altogether. Such views have a profoundly negative effect on our general understanding of human knowledge and on those institutions central to civic life in a democratic society. In this talk, I consider the consequences of abandoning truth and propose what might be needed to retrieve it in a climate of radical relativism. |

Purchased in the middle of the 19th century by Thaddeus Davids and given his name, it was leased to the US War Department for hospital purposes to treat both Union and Confederate soldiers wounded in the Civil War. In July 1878, Davids Island became a longstanding recruiting and training center for the U.S. Army. It was later renamed Fort Slocum and was converted to a coastal artillery defense post. The island continued to be used by the U.S. Defense Department for recruitment, housing headquarters of the First Air Force, and housing air-defense batteries until it was deactivated in the Mid-1960s. In 1967, New Rochelle purchased Davids Island and various efforts to redevelop the island continue through today. |

Title of Talk: "American Democracy in Crisis"
About the Program:
The public’s disenchantment with and distrust of American government is at an all-time high and who can blame them? In the face of widespread challenges – everything from record levels of personal and national debt and the sky-high cost of education, to gun violence, racial discrimination, an immigration crisis, overpriced pharmaceuticals, and much more – the government seems paralyzed and unable to act. The most recent example is Covid-19. It’s the deadliest pandemic in over a century. In addition to an unimaginable sick and death toll, it has left more than thirty million Americans unemployed. Despite this, Washington let the first round of supplemental unemployment benefits run out and for more than a month were unable to agree on a bill to help those suffering. This talk, based on Dr. Zaino’s book of the same name, delves into why we are in this situation.

The logistics, geographic, and communication barriers were monumental. Who led them to victory in spite of these complex international problems? Six different Commanders of the CBI Theatre of War from 1941-1945 will be discussed, including their leadership and style differences, their missions and methods, and what this revolving door of command meant to young troops struggling to live another day and make it home from World War II China.

Title of Talk: "Electric Vehicles in New York"
About the Program:
Transportation is responsible for almost 30% of NYC's greenhouse gas emissions (GHGs), with most of these emissions coming from passenger cars. Increasing the number of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in the five boroughs is an important part of the city’s effort to fight climate change by reducing GHG emission 80% by 2050. Compared to conventional vehicles, EVs have: lower emissions, less noise, and discounts on tolls. There are three different charging levels for EVs: Level 1 Charge (Up to 5 miles of range per hour of charging, Standard household outlet, Low voltage); Level 2 Charge (Up to 20 miles of range per hour of charge, Mid-level voltage (240v), commonly used in large appliances like dryers); Level 3 Charge:
(Over 30 miles of range per 10 minutes of charge, DC Fast Charging, the fastest charging option (over 480v). New York City is creating PlugNYC, a comprehensive network of publicly accessible Level 2 Chargers and DC fast chargers. Level 2 charging stations allow EV owners to charge their vehicles while parked at home, at work, or curbside. DC fast chargers offer a charging experience comparable to a gas station.

Title of Talk: Growing Skepticism about Vaccination and Public
Health: "How Did We Get Here?"
About the Program
Despite the fact that public health has had many successes in the past and saved countless lives through vaccinations, public health has recently been thrust into the spotlight and put on the defensive through a movement of opposition. This opposition has become so concerning that the World Health Organization now considers vaccine hesitancy as one of the ten leading threats to global health. How did this happen?
This talk will focus on how resistance to childhood vaccinations (for diseases like measles, mumps, whooping cough) and other public health measures has grown, especially recently with the COVID vaccines, and how this resistance may potentially have serious impacts on all of us. Specifically, we will review the history of vaccines and hesitancy, the reasons for vaccine hesitancy, the challenges of effective public health messaging and the role that state governments may play.
Brief Bio
Dr. Penny Liberatos is an Associate Professor in the Division of Health Behavior and Community Health at New York Medical College, School of Health Sciences & Practice. Her academic training and research bridge the fields of social science and public health. Prior to entering academia, she was a public health practitioner working on many projects in the area of maternal and child health with the New York City Department of Health and other non-profits in New York City.
