IN THE NEWS
ANYTHING BUT RETIRING
The Old Guard of Westchester disproves the idea that retirement lacks purpose and fulfillment.
A social organization of retired men, The Old Guard engages in fellowship, recreation, mutual support, exchange of ideas and community service.
Guest speakers and Q & As over coffee, bridge games, book reviews and bowling, golf outings and photographic trips are just part of the male bonding. There are also dinner dances, picnics, barbecues and art shows with the members’ wives. Interested? The group meets Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon at the Ethical Culture Society of Westchester, 7 Saxon Wood Road, White Plains.

OLD GUARD DINING
Members ofthe Old Guard of Westchester, a fraternal organization founded in 1954, include retired senior men from all walks oflife who engage in a variety of stimulating indoor and outdoor activities throughout the
year. They gather each week at The Meeting House of the Ethical Culture Society in White Plains. Their dining club is quite popular. Each month they pick a restaurant for a formal luncheon.
Recently, members, their wives and friends gathered at The 808 Bistro in Scarsdale for a stellar multicourse repast. I was lucky enough to be invited. The afternoon went deliciously well. The restaurant put on quite a culinary show.
The group was offered a three course menu loaded with fine choices. My starter of crispy eggplant with fresh mozzarella, basil and balsamic drizzle was a delight. For a main course, I chose one of the signature pastas: pappardelle Bolognese. It was delish! Had to have their homemade apple strudel with vanilla ice cream for dessert. All at the long banquet table lauded the meal.

Camaraderie in Retirement
Outings. Barbecues. Bridge games. Bowling. Golf outings. Hiking. Social luncheons. Dinner dances with the wives. These are just some of the many activities that members of the Old Guard of Westchester, a social organization of retired men, participate intogether.
As with the programming schedule, the Old Guard membership is diverse and the organization is committed to their "stay young" through involvement and en- gagement philosophy. This men's group of Westchester County retirees have had active careers as lawyers, doctors, accountants, teachers, entrepreneurs and government workers, and maintain a bit of that work discipline with their weekly meetings. Old Guard Board Member Alan Stern notes, "I've made new friends, become more active and have picked up so many new skills through the work I've done for the organization." Stephen Loewengart adds about his membership, "Retirement is well spent when filled with possibility and exploration a s it leads to new avenues of personal growth." |
The group, which has served Westchester since 1954, meets at the Ethical Culture Society on Saxon Woods Road in White Plains on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. Many members come early for some extra socializing and coffee before the speaker presents at 11 a.m., followed by lunch and perhaps some bridge or a group discussion.
These Old Guard men know that staying active, intellectually stimulated, and socially engaged enables them to be successfully retired. So whether it's their Timely Topics discussion group, a friendly game of bocce or community service, The Old Guard of Westchester regularly enables their members to be vital lifelong learners and contributors to the community. And, with their camaraderie and varied activities membership may be just what you body and soul crave. Contact them at 914-548-8448 or visit www.ogwestchester.org to learn more |
